Wayne Galloway demo and Peter Russell workshop

31st January 2020

Last week at Kirkcaldy Art Club, on Thursday evening, 23rd January, Wayne Galloway, one of our tutors, demonstrated to members the different techniques that he uses to create his work. He showed how he creates a crackle effect by applying sodium silicate, and how he makes his pots smooth by using terra sigillata. Wayne also showed us photos of the different firing techniques he applies to create his work, such as smoke and pit firing, obvara, and how he uses horsehair and feathers to decorate his pots. It was very interesting and members left feeling inspired by all these new techniques.

Then, on Sunday 26th January, Stirling based artist, Peter Russell, led a workshop in mixed media involving printing and collage. Firstly participants produced many different types of printing. The next stage was to build up a collage, using a wide range of materials, working on a theme, then the prints were incorporated into the collage. This all gave opportunities to experiment and be very creative. This was a busy workshop, but also was fun, with excellent input from Peter who encouraged everyone throughout the process, comparing their outcomes with those of famous collage artists through the ages. This was a dynamic, fast paced and very productive workshop.

This coming Sunday, 2nd February, we look forward to Chi Zhang visiting us to demonstrate his skills in 'Chinese Brush Painting. Chi is based at the Confucious Institute in Edinburgh and some of his work has been projected on to Edinburgh Castle during a tattoo at the Edinburgh Festival.
