Marshall has been one of our tutors for around 20 years and even if you haven't been in one of his classes, you may have seen him sharing some of his techniques at a demonstration night. He paints under his full name of James Marshall Dickson and has a painting called 'Boilers Three, Bo'ness' in the 127th Annual Exhibition of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (The RSW). It is that painting that has won an award. The award, the Winsor and Newton Materials Award, worth £500, was presented by Ron McWhirter of Winsor & Newton.
Talking about his painting 'Boilers Three, Bo'ness', Marshall said "Virtually all my work is based on industrial imagery, no doubt because my childhood memories are of living in an area where views over an open landscape invariably ended in coal mines or railway lines. As a frequent visitor to Bo'ness, home of the Scottish Railway Preservation Society, I am always fascinated by the rlethora of objects scattered around. This group of old boilers, seeming to have a conversation amongst themselves, were just asking to be painted."
Marshall was educated at Beath High School, left in1960 and graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1964. He was a full-time teacher in secondary education from 1965 - 1978. Marshall was painting and exhibiting during this period and has continued to work in visual arts exhibiting in many venues, groups and solo throughout Britain.
